Requirements under REACH

No data, no market

One of the main requirements under REACH is that manufacturers and importers register chemicals with the European Chemicals Agency. As part of this registration process, they must provide information on the properties, uses and safety of the chemicals they make or import. Failure to do so means can those chemicals cannot lawfully be placed on the market.

This information is kept and checked by the UK’s Chemicals Regulation Directorate (part of the Health & Safety Executive). Some chemicals will be subject to further safety evaluations if the Directorate or another EU Member State has concerns about their hazardous properties.

Manufacturers and importers must provide Safety Data Sheets to anyone who uses chemicals further down the supply chain. These include information on the chemicals’ ingredients, properties and risks to ensure that they are safely managed.

Dangerous chemicals

REACH imposes additional requirements for chemicals with very harmful properties. These requirements apply regardless of the volume of chemicals produced. Substances “of very high concern” have to be authorised before they can enter the market. REACH restricts or bans the supply of substances which pose a particular threat.
