Nano in sports and leisure products

Sports and leisure equipment containing nanomaterials are covered by the General Product (Safety) Regulations 2005. These Regulations require that all consumer products (not just sports and leisure equipment) are safe for use.

Products made using conventional materials and those made using nano are subject to this safety requirement.

Although the Regulations cover all sorts of consumer products, there are concerns that they might not work very effectively for nano-based products.

This is because appropriate testing methods for nano have not yet been developed, making it difficult for manufacturers and suppliers to determine whether nanomaterials are safe or unsafe before putting products on the market.

A lot of work is being done to develop nano-specific risk assessment and safety testing methods which will help to resolve this problem. For more information, see the Introduction to Law and Nano page.
