Making sure that nano in food is safe to eat
There are strict laws to make sure that food products sold in the UK are safe to eat.
The vast majority of these laws come from the European Union (EU) and apply in all EU Member States. This means that food products are governed by the same safety requirements wherever you go in the EU.
Are there specific laws for nano in food?
No.
Does this mean that nano in food escapes regulation?
No. We rely on existing laws to control the safety of nano in foods. Even though these laws were designed to cover conventional food products, they are generally broad enough to cover foods containing nano too.
Who’s in charge in the UK?
The Food Standards Agency and local authorities enforce food safety laws. If manufacturers or suppliers breach certain food safety requirements, the Agency or local authority can prosecute them.
