Nano in packaging
Looking into the future
Some of the future uses of nano in packing may include:
'Smart' packaging
Smart packaging generally refers to packaging which does something other than wrap things up and can cover a lot of areas - including:
Warning packs
Packaging incorporating messages to monitor how fresh food is, or warn that it has exceeded refrigeration guidelines. They will allow us to easily spot invisible but harmful substances, such as salmonella or e-coli in foods or tell us when something, like milk, is off.
Ripeness sensors
Sensors, probably inks, in packaging which will help show when food, particularly food is ripe or over-ripe by sensing the gases they give off and changing colour. These may be available already in the UK, but it is not certain.
Very smart packaging!
We may even have packaging which changes according to conditions - eg ice cream cartons which would change to be more heat resistant if a pack were to be left in a car on a hot summer's day.
