Nano in medicine
Looking to the future
Cell/gene therapy
One area that nanotechnology could have an impact is in the developing field of cell/gene therapy. Cell/gene therapy is basically the insertion of genes into people’s cells and tissues to treat diseases or change the nature of the cell - eg become a liver cell instead of a skin cell.
Remote health monitoring
In the future implants or particles may monitor the key functions of your body, so you can go home, but the hospital can keep an eye on your condition remotely.
Safety issues
Because of the stringent testing, disclosure and regulatory framework associated with medicines and medical devices, the safety of medical applications of nano is causing less concern than it is in other areas.
