Nano and energy
Energy saving
Right now, the use of nanotechnologies is primarily in the area of energy saving. Nanotechnologies contribute to energy saving by making vehicles lighter thereby consuming less fuel, improving insulation, making lighting more efficient, and even putting additives in fuels to make them burn more efficiently.
Within the area of energy saving, the use of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers in composite materials provide weight savings in vehicles but keeps them structurally just as strong as they were before.
Special insulation materials like aerogels and fillers like nanoclay are being used to insulate pipelines for liquid natural gas and should be expanding for use in buildings.
'Smart' glass windows have also been developed using nano which can reflect heat, keeping the hot sun out and the central heating in, so saving a lot of energy, in particular in office buildings with lots of windows.
