Nano in cosmetics and personal care

Safety issues

The safety concerns associated with nanotechnologies in cosmetics and personal care are mainly about whether or not nano materials can enter the bloodstream through the skin and if they will do any harm when they get there.

Most nano materials used in this area are thought not to enter the body through unbroken skin, though further research is required, and is being done, on skin with wounds or where skin is damaged.

However, some materials, fullerenes and nano gold in particular, are felt to require much more attention to understand their safe use in cosmetics.

Other processes such as nano emulsions are considered to be of less concern.
